To apply for permanent residency in Canada through any of the Express Entry-managed programs, eligible work experience is essential. This article provides an overview of how student work experience is treated under the different Express Entry programs.
Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP)
For candidates applying under the FSWP, student work experience can count towards the required work experience if it meets specific criteria:
- The work must be paid, either through wages or commission.
- The employment must be continuous without gaps.
- The work must meet all other program requirements.
This includes work done through co-op programs or apprenticeships, as long as it fulfills these conditions.
Canadian Experience Class (CEC)
Candidates applying under the Canadian Experience Class (CEC) cannot use student work experience—whether gained in Canada or internationally—towards meeting the work experience requirements of this program.
Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP)
Similarly, work experience gained as a student does not count toward the required experience for the Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP).
Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) and Student Work Experience
While the CRS score is a key factor in ranking Express Entry candidates, Canadian work experience gained while studying full-time does not contribute to the score. However, work experience obtained during full-time studies abroad may be counted towards the CRS score.
