Alberta is addressing a critical shortage in its trades industry with new incentives aimed at skilled immigrants. According to a recent Statistics Canada report, Canada is experiencing a significant decline in its labour force participation due to the retirement of baby boomers, creating an urgent need for workers, particularly in the trades sector.
In response, Alberta launched the “Alberta is Calling” program in April 2024. This initiative offers up to 2,000 skilled tradespeople a one-time refundable tax credit of $5,000 to incentivize relocation to Alberta.
To qualify for the program, applicants must meet specific criteria, including:
- Be 18 years or older
- Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident
- Move to Alberta between May 1 and December 31, 2024
- Be a tax resident of Alberta by December 31, 2024
- Reside in Alberta for at least 12 consecutive months after moving
This effort highlights the ongoing challenges in Alberta’s trades industry, which has long struggled with a significant labour shortage. The province currently lists nine high-demand trade occupations, including construction managers, electricians, plumbers, and civil engineers.
Alberta’s trades industry is crucial to the provincial economy, and this program aims to fill the gaps with skilled talent from across Canada. In addition, Alberta ranks as one of the top provinces in Canada for job vacancies, offering newcomers opportunities to secure employment.
